BARGYLIA
An ancient city located in a hidden position by the sea, on the shore of a lagoon in the Güllük (Mandalya) Gulf. Named after Bargylus, the friend killed by the winged horse Pegasus of the mythological hero Bellerophon.
Bargylia is an ancient city located in a hidden position by the sea, on the shore of a lagoon in the Güllük (Mandalya) Gulf. The city was named after Bargylus, a companion of the mythological hero Bellerophon, who was killed by the winged horse Pegasus.
According to legend, Bellerophon was riding Pegasus when the horse accidentally kicked and killed Bargylus. Grief-stricken, Bellerophon founded the city and named it in memory of his friend.
The city was an important center during antiquity, known for its temple dedicated to Artemis Kindyas. The annual festival held in honor of the goddess attracted visitors from across the region.
